SUNSET CIRCLES

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

SUNSET CIRCLES is a collection of work from a circle of artists contributing to or inspired by the Sunset, an artistic community nestled in the dunes of San Francisco. A circle of artists gather in a neighborhood pillared by the sea, they gather ideas and draw inspiration from the wild and unrefined scenery, and the community they’ve cultivated amongst it. The underlying theme of the work celebrates a circle emcompassing the minimal, natural, handmade and organic forms, materials and resourcefulness that the artists, through simple, bold, and intricate expression, brandish in their reverence for their pelagic community.

The artists include:
• Jeff Canham
• Julie Cloutier
• Kyle Field
• Katie Goldman Macdonald
• Mason St Peter
• Serena Mitnik-Miller
• Jay Nelson
• Jesse Schlesinger
• Orion Shepherd
• David Wilson

New York, April 2011 — EARTH BY is pleased to announce the release of a brand new original and limited edition print by top contemporary artist, Serena Mitnik-Miller. Hinging on an artistic practice that often begins with an impression of nature, Earth By Serena Mitnik-Miller continues this line of inquiry, comprising a series of layered concentric circles that mimic the flux of the earth’s surface.

Spontaneously spurred by coastal landscapes and the ever-changing sea, Serena Mitnik-Miller is an adept translator of the natural world. Through the mediums of watercolor, printmaking and photography, she explores the abundant complexities of water, light, color and movement. Ethereal and pure, Mitnik-Miller’s paintings are ingrained with the quiet mystery of the ocean’s unfathomable womb. Primarily composed of concentric shapes, swelling orbs and pulsing bubbles, her free-flowing works strike the perfect balance between geometry and fine art. She has shown at SFMOMA Artists Gallery in San Francisco; Space 15 Twenty and New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles, among others. Mitnik Miller is co-founder and creative director of Two Birds Fly and The General Store. She lives and works in San Francisco.

Earth By is a one-of-a-kind art project that attracts top contemporary artists to create original work based on their personal interpretation of the planet we inhabit. Past contributors include Peter Beard, Chris Johanson, Aurel Schmidt, Allison Schulnik, Ryan McGinness, Hisham Bharoocha and Wangechi Mutu among others. Committed to keeping the project relevant and fresh, each month a new Earth By artist will be introduced, with the original work and a limited edition of prints available for purchase. Envisioned as an opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness about our world, ten percent of all proceeds are donated to Charity: water and 350.org. Visit the gallery (http://earthby.planet-mag.com) to view Earth By’s current roster of artists.
